The concept of playing miniature golf dates back to the early 20th century. The father of Robert Taylor helped popularize the game in the late 1920s. Unlike today, when many courses are built around hills and simple geometric obstacles, Joseph Taylor’s courses were much more elaborate. They included a variety of obstacles, such as windmills, castles, and wishing wells. Eventually, these miniature golf courses spread throughout the world, becoming extremely popular.
Players use a putter, a small club with a tiny head. These putters are made for close-range play. Miniature golfers take turns hitting a golf ball into the hole (known as a cup). A hole in one occurs when the ball lands in the hole with just one stroke. During the game, players must also consider the movement of obstacles that can block their way. It is easy to lose concentration if you’re distracted.
In the United States, prize money is the highest, with competitions in the US paying $5,000 and more. In mainland Europe, however, prize money is often minimal. International championships typically award no prize money. Nevertheless, the US Pro Mini Golf Association and the Professional Putters Association offer national tournaments. Both organizations represent the United States in the World Minigolfsport Federation and the US Pro-Mini-Golf Association, respectively. The US Professional Mini-Golf Association is the official representative of the World Minigolfsport Federation, and is an active member of the WMF.
